Italian Tissue Banks Lead with Global Standards: Insights from AIBAT’s Inaugural National Conference

ICCBBA Presents ISBT 128 to Support Italy’s National Implementation Efforts.

The Associazione Italiana Banche dei Tessuti (AIBAT), or Italian Association of Tissue Banks, successfully held its first-ever national conference in Milan on October 24-25, 2024. This historic event gathered key stakeholders in the tissue banking community, establishing a platform to discuss both national and international issues relevant to the field.

Eoin McGrath of ICCBBA was among the esteemed speakers, invited to present on the implementation of ISBT 128 for tissue products. His session was presented alongside insights from Stefaan van der Spiegel of the EU Commission and Jacinto Sánchez, representing the European Directorate for the Quality of Medicines (EDQM). Their discussions underscored AIBAT’s commitment to addressing global developments and challenges facing tissue banks today.

Under national regulations, Italian tissue banks are required to implement ISBT 128 standards, positioning ICCBBA as a crucial resource in their adoption efforts. The Milan conference offered a valuable opportunity for ICCBBA to connect directly with members of Italy’s tissue banking community, highlighting the range of support and guidance available. Attendees were informed of various channels through which they could engage with ICCBBA, ensuring they have the support needed to navigate implementation.

ICCBBA is deeply grateful for the opportunity to participate and present at this event. Recognizing the need for ongoing education, ICCBBA is open to partnering with AIBAT to organize a dedicated event focused on implementation support if desired by the community. With Dr. Diletta Trojan of Fondazione Banca dei Tessuti del Veneto representing AIBAT and the European tissue bank community on ICCBBA’s Board, the collaborative efforts to advance tissue banking standards remain strong.

The Milan conference was not only a milestone for AIBAT but also a testament to the importance of international collaboration in supporting tissue banking excellence.
