This inaugural live event will offer participants an opportunity to engage directly with ICCBBA's esteemed Technical Team, gaining invaluable insights, clarifications, and updates on the ISBT 128 Standard.


Engaging with Experts

Scheduled for May 23, 2024, the event will feature a panel of distinguished speakers:












Karen Moniz, MHA, MT(ASCP)SBB: Karen, the Technical Director, leads ICCBBA's efforts in adoption of the ISBT 128 Standard to meet the ever-evolving traceability, labeling, and coding needs for medical products of human origin. With over 40 years of blood banking experience, Karen joined the ICCBBA staff in 2020.












Robin Wilkinson, B.A.: Robin, the Deputy Technical Director, has over 17 years of experience in the blood banking field, where she focused on the development of laboratory and blood bank software solutions that utilize ISBT 128 Standards. Robin joined the team this year and is passionate about advancing ICCBBA’s mission to enhance patient safety on a global scale through MPHO traceability and biovigilance.












Erwin Cabana, B.A.: Erwin started at ICCBBA in 2006 as an Information Standards Specialist and currently serves as ICCBBA’s Technical Manager. Erwin brings profound understanding and expertise in information standards.












Mónica Freire, B.S.: With over 15 years in the blood banking field, Mónica, the Standards Documentation Manager, drives continuous improvement in ICCBBA's documentation system. She has provided support to various technical advisory groups, leveraging her expertise to facilitate collaborative decision-making and the adoption of the ISBT 128 Standard.












Ryan Ruiz, B.S.: With a passion for enhancing patient safety globally, Ryan guides users through the implementation process of the ISBT 128 Standard. He has been an Information Standard Specialist (ISS) with ICCBBA since 2019. Ryan is an expert in the ISBT 128 Standard, providing guidance to current and future users, and manages all ISBT 128 Product Description Code (PDC) requests.












Alex Garlets, B.S.: An Information Standards Specialist since 2021, Alex helps current and future ISBT 128 users through ICCBBA’s Help Desk. Alex has experience as a teacher and uses that expertise to pass his knowledge of the ISBT 128 Standard on to ISBT 128 users thus ensuring that the interpretation of the Standard is globally consistent.


Navigating Discussions

Moderated by Betty Perez, whose multifaceted role within ICCBBA's Technical Department spans over four years. Betty is the Executive Assistant to the Technical Director, operates as a project manager, and works closely with the TAG Staff liaisons to facilitate TAG conference calls/meetings. Her moderation promises a seamless discussion, offering participants an interactive platform to pose questions and gain insights about the ISBT 128 Standard.

About ICCBBA:  

ICCBBA is the international standards organization responsible for the management and development of the ISBT 128 Standard.  


The acronym ISBT was originally derived from the important role played by the International Society of Blood Transfusion in the development of the Standard. Today it expands as Information Standard for Blood and Transplantation. The number 128 reflects the 128 characters of the ISO/IEC 646 7-bit character set.  


The acronym ICCBBA is derived from the International Council for Commonality in Blood Banking Automation.
